DESCRIPTIONS

 

Cotahuasi  is placed in the highest Andean  place of Arequipa's department, in the Peruvian south. This province is characterized by its steep relief: cut here and as far back as rivers and gullies, with an altitud that different between the 1,000 and the 6,093 m.s.n.m., with 19 ecological floors. Its rural and isolated nature has done that its traditional customs and pictures that peoples have not got lost, like it has happened in neighboring provinces.

 

In this province you were finding pictures que peoples that even preserve their ancient customs, volcanoes, snow-capped mountains, a great waterfall, suspension bridges, forest of goads, of cactus and of rocks. Also pre-Hispanic platforms, wari and Inca ruins. But especially a gigantic, enormous and fabulous canyon: the deepest of America and one of the deep mas of the world with 3,535 meters of depth: Cotahuasi Canyon.

 

The population belongs 18,926 inhabitants. But Alca and Tomepampa are distributed in an irregular way, the major population this concentration in the villages of Cotahuasi; in other  villages and annexes the different population between 30 and 880 inhabitants, the average belongs 340 inhabitants. The inhabitants of the area are almost all descendants from the native groups Wari and Incas. 70 % of the human population is along the river Cotahuasi, where the agriculture and breeding of animals practises. Groups isolated of few families live in the puna, on the valley, where they take advantage of the native pastures to support herds of auquénidos: alpacas, llamas, vicunas.

 

The province is visited by tourists of Peru and of the world, which manage to contemplate its impressive landscape. It is an ideal place for the tourist who pleases the nature, the trekking, canotaje, camping, the fishing and can estimate the peculiarity of the traditional cultures.
